WHO ARE YOU, WHERE ARE YOU FROM, AND WHAT MUSIC DO YOU MAKE?
My name is Louis and I create music under the name CONFOUND! I was raised on the island of O‘ahu, Hawaii for most of my life. I now reside in the PDX area. I create alternative music inspired by elements of alternative rap.
WHY CONFOUND!?
My friend and I used to create music for fun, and not in a very serious manner, during the summer of 2022. We would joke around saying we needed a group name. I came up with the idea of finding a word that represented the idea of confusion and the idea of misunderstanding. My friend and I found words that correlated with those ideas, and when we came across “confound”, I instantly knew I wanted to use that name. So our little group name became “CONFOUND!”, but as time went on, I realized that I did not want to just joke around anymore and that I wanted to start taking music seriously. From there I decided to keep the name CONFOUND! and use it as my personal artist name going forward.
WHO ARE YOUR MUSIC INSPIRATIONS?
WHAT INITIALLY SPARKED YOUR INTEREST IN PURSUING MUSIC?
I have many inspirations in all of art, but musically my biggest inspirations are Kevin Abstract (BROCKHAMPTON) and JPEGMAFIA. I know it might seem unusual since my music doesn’t really sound like theirs, but my inspiration comes from more than just sonic elements. I take very heavy inspiration from Kevin Abstract because, as I learned more about him and his story leading BROCKHAMPTON, I learned that everything I want to achieve through music and creation is possible. I really admire the way he brought a group of other creatives together and built everything from the ground up on their own. That shows me that everything is so possible when we work together and build together. JPEGMAFIA is another very large influence to me. I have always watched interviews of all of my favorite artists and read deep about their story and what brought them to music. JPEGMAFIA is the reason I felt like I myself could also make it in music. I am very inspired by him regarding the fact that he was creating his earliest projects while being in the military away from everything he knew. That is very inspiring to me because it opened my eyes to the idea that there are really no excuses regarding our dreams if we really want them. As I grew older, music started becoming such a special thing to me, and I always had so many ideas when it came to visions of music. After learning about my favorite artists’ stories, I just knew it was so possible to do the same thing as them.
